At MEPC 72 and the preceeding Intersessional. In what was described as a landmark agreement member states agreed to a 50% reduction in sector wide carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 and to achieve a 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030. The carbon intensity means that an individual ship would have to reduce its emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 2008. The sector wide target is a bit more complicated because it would have to account for the expected growth in the industry between 2008 to 2050.
